Optical Ring Resonator COMSOL Simulation

A COMSOL-based photonics study modelling single-mode optical waveguides and whispering-gallery-mode ring resonators. The workflow investigates geometry, material setup, electric-field confinement and wavelength response to improve resonance sharpness, reduce optical losses and support compact PIC applications.

Step 01

Single-Mode Waveguide Geometry

The project begins with a rectangular single-mode optical waveguide model. The core and cladding domains define the guided optical path and provide the baseline structure used before developing the ring-resonator configuration.

Step 02

Mode Analysis Setup

A COMSOL Mode Analysis study was configured to evaluate the optical modes supported by the waveguide. This step identifies whether the geometry and material combination can maintain single-mode behaviour before resonance analysis.

Step 03

Optical Ring Geometry

The waveguide model was extended into a ring-resonator layout with an adjacent coupling waveguide. This geometry allows evanescent coupling into the ring and creates wavelength-selective resonance behaviour.

Step 04

Resonant Electric-Field Distribution

The COMSOL field result shows energy circulating around the resonator at the resonant wavelength. This visual confirms whispering-gallery-mode behaviour and highlights where the field is confined inside the ring path.

Step 05

Wavelength Response and Notch Behaviour

The final response plot compares transmittance and reflectance across a focused wavelength interval. Sharp dips in the response indicate resonant wavelengths and support the study objective of improving Q-factor and reducing optical loss.
